He Raps in Darija and Became the Most-Streamed Artist in MENA Anyway

The Language Question

Moroccan Darija is often treated within the Arabic-speaking world as difficult for non-Moroccans to follow, sufficiently distinct in vocabulary and rhythm that artists seeking regional reach have historically been advised to move toward Modern Standard Arabic, Egyptian dialect, French or English.

ElGrandeToto, born Taha Fahssi in Casablanca, did not. He performs primarily in Darija with elements of French and English, and scaled anyway.

What the Numbers Show

He has been the most-streamed artist in Morocco for five consecutive years, and was the most listened-to artist in the MENA region on Spotify in 2021 and 2023. His 2021 debut album Caméléon ranked among the top global album debuts on Spotify at release.

At the 2024 Billboard Arabia Awards he took three prizes, alongside fellow Moroccan artists Khtek, Manal and Dystinct. That detail is more interesting than his individual sweep: it indicates a scene, not an outlier.

Not a Solo Phenomenon

The Africa Report has covered how Darija rap went international through several artists at once, including 7liwa and Naar. The interesting unit of analysis is the language's viability, not any single career.

Morocco World News has argued the scene functions as an unofficial parliament of Moroccan youth, which is a large claim, but points at something real: Darija rap is where a set of social arguments get made publicly.

The Register

In a GQ Middle East profile, he is described moving between English with a London inflection, French and Darija in conversation. That code-switching is the same thing his records do, which suggests the multilingualism is a description of how he thinks rather than a market strategy.

What It Actually Proves

The conventional wisdom held that regional scale required linguistic compromise. A Casablanca rapper working mostly in Moroccan dialect topping regional streaming for multiple years is a counterexample.

One caveat worth keeping: streaming rank is not the same as revenue, and platform-reported listening positions are marketing artefacts as much as measurements. What can be said confidently is that the assumed language ceiling did not hold.
